LUSTER SHIELD

FALL 2024
CORE STUDIO
INSTRUCTOR: CARLOS MEDELLIN

Luster Shield reinterprets the ancient Chinese Yang Sui, a concave copper mirror once used to ignite fire, as a contemporary symbol of resistance and protection. Traditionally associated with purity and reverence, the Yang Sui serves as inspiration for this project, which reflects on the shared trauma of police violence and the power of collective defiance.

This project originates from my Metabolic Section study of Avery Hall, where I traced the history of light as both sustenance and protest. From the coal-powered energy grid of the past to the flashlights of 1968 protests, and now the phone lights of the 2024 demonstrations, light has always been a tool of knowledge, defiance, and resilience. The Luster Shield builds on this legacy.

Echoing protests at Columbia and beyond, where laser lights were weaponized, the Luster Shield reclaims and transforms their power. Its concave surface deflects aggression, scattering focused beams into a dispersed force, turning individual vulnerability into collective strength. More than a shield, it becomes a beacon of solidarity, where light connects and empowers, shifting its meaning from accusation to protection and hope.
